I Wish My Bloody Mary Counted as a Gut Reset (Let’s Be Honest)

by Lisa McLeod-Lofquist on May 04, 2026
I Wish My Bloody Mary Counted as a Gut Reset (Let’s Be Honest)

I love a good Bloody Mary.

If it’s before 3 p.m. and we’re meeting somewhere for weekend brunch, you can safely assume I’m ordering one. It feels like a whole salad in a glass: tomato juice, pickle, lemon or lime, an olive, a beef stick, celery. In my fantasy world, this is exactly what my gut needs.

Lycopene from the tomato juice, fiber from the celery, maybe some fermented goodness from the pickle or olive… surely my microbiome is high‑fiving me, right?

I wish.

What’s actually in that glass (for your gut)

There are some real upsides hiding in a Bloody Mary. Tomato juice offers antioxidants and some nutritional benefits. Celery adds water and fiber, which help keep things moving. The salt on the rim, the pickle, the olive, they all hint at something tangy and “gut‑ish,” like they want to be part of my microbiome success story.  So yes, there are pieces of a gut‑friendly picture in there.  But then there’s the rest of the picture.

Most Bloody Mary mixes are loaded with sodium, and the drink itself is a cocktail. Alcohol is not your microbiome’s love language. And those pickles and olives that sound probiotic? Most restaurant versions are “quick‑pickled” in vinegar, not truly fermented, which means they usually don’t contain the live, beneficial microbes we like to imagine.  So basically, it’s not a gut health protocol. It’s a fun drink with a few nutritional bright spots.

The little bargains we make with ourselves

That’s really what this is about.

We all have these tiny negotiations in our heads: “There’s lemon in my water, so that cancels out the sugar.”  “It’s red wine, so it’s good for my heart.”  “There’s celery and tomato juice in my Bloody Mary, so my gut is fine.”

These stories are kind, they’re comforting, and sometimes they help us feel a little less guilty. But they can also keep us from giving our bodies what they actually need. My gut doesn’t need me to pretend a Bloody Mary is a substitute for a biome rescue plan.  It needs consistency in the form of fiber, color, plants, sleep, movement, not to mention microbial support that’s designed for more than brunch aesthetics.

What my gut really needs (that my Bloody Mary can’t give)

What makes a real difference for gut restoration and biome health includes input that leads to better diversity, balance, and change.

        - Regular plant diversity. Veggies, fruits, legumes, herbs, and whole grains that feed different gut microbes.

        - True fermented foods. Traditionally fermented pickles, sauerkraut, kimchi, yogurt, and kefir, which are foods contain live cultures, not just vinegar and flavoring.

        - Nervous system care. Enough sleep and less constant fight‑or‑flight, which both directly influence how your gut feels and functions.

         - Targeted probiotic support. Something that’s formulated to actually reach and influence the gut ecosystem, not just sit on a label.

A Bloody Mary can absolutely be part of a fun, full life.It just isn’t the microbiome strategy.

Where Original Biome fits

For me, the compromise looks like this:

  • Yes, I still order the Bloody Mary before 3 p.m.

  • No, I don’t pretend it’s medicine.

  • And every day, not just on brunch days, I do something that is for my gut.

I’m intentional about having a dedicated, science‑backed gut ritual. Taking Original Biome works in spite of my “nice try” moments.  Instead of asking my cocktail to double as my probiotic, I let my cocktail be a cocktail, and my microbiome gets its own, consistent support.

Because at the end of the day (or the beginning, the way I work it), your gut doesn’t need perfection. It needs real support and repetition.  The celery stick is cute. The tomato juice is helpful. The ritual is fun.  But my gut health? That’s happening deliberately every day, at the forefront of my day.
